FAQ

Common questions from parents and volunteers

How can my child join?

We operate a Waiting List as we are at capacity across all our sections. It's simple to get your child added, simply click on 'Join today', fill out the details and we'll be in touch when a space opens. Please note that we cannot provide specific dates on when a place will be offered, so please refrain from contacting our volunteers.

Where do you meet?

We meet at Gotherington Village Hall during term time.

Do you meet during school holidays?

No, our regular section meetings take place during term time only. This gives families time for holidays and also gives our volunteers a break from weekly volunteering. We may occasionally run camps, trips or events outside normal meeting times.

What does it cost to be a member?

Subscriptions help cover hall hire, equipment, activity materials, badges and membership with The Scout Association. We charge £35 three times a year (October, February and May) per child and payments are made through our group management system, Scoutworks. If you would like to discuss support in confidence, please contact us — we never want cost to be a barrier to joining.

Where do I see payments, events and permissions?

Payments, event information and permissions are managed through Scoutworks, our group management system. Parents can use Scoutworks to check finances, make payments, respond to events and keep their young person’s details up to date.

What should my young person bring each week?

Section leaders will let parents know if anything specific is needed for a meeting. Usually, young people should bring a drink bottle and wear their uniform once they have been invested.

When does my child need uniform?

Young people usually need uniform once they have been invested, which is typically around the fifth week after joining. Section leaders will let you know when this is coming up.

What if my child has allergies, medical needs or additional needs?

Please make sure all medical, allergy and additional needs information is completed and kept up to date in Scoutworks. It is also helpful to speak to your section leader so we can support your young person appropriately.

Can parents help?

Yes, parent help is always appreciated. We may operate a parent rota when extra support is needed for a section or activity. If you would like to help more regularly, please get in touch — our group is run entirely by volunteers.
